The Northview Knights held a team meeting following their semifinal victory in the IHSAA girls' tennis sectional. They were in the championship match, but "We knew coming into [the championship] that if we played like [Friday night] we weren't going to win it. We had a little team meeting and said "This is the Northview Sectional and we might as well be defending champions again," Northview senior Jazmine Kellum said.
Northview played some of its best tennis of the season Saturday morning to win its fourth straight sectional championship, 4-1 over Greencastle.
Northview, now 16-4, now hopes to perform better on Tuesday in the Center Grove Regional than last year. The Knights play the winner of the Shelbyville Sectional.
"I'm hoping we can pull off the first game and win it. These girls have the potential and have worked hard all year," Volunteer coach Emily Goff said.
Northview's only loss came at No. 1 singles, where, for the second year in a row, Greencastle's Kelsey Hennette outlasted Kellum 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. It was a 2 hour and 20 minute contest of contrasting styles.
Kellum is now 14-5 on the season.
"My whole goal throughout the whole match was to slow the point down and kind of run her back and forth. Her backhand was definitely better than her forehand and I tried my best to get to her forehand, but in the third set, it was wearing us both down. It was a long drawn out match,"? Kellum said.
Northview's sectional crown was secured long before Kellum and Hennette finished.
Olivia Kumpf and Hannah Pond scored Northview's first point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Ali Rentschler made it 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Andrea James and Bonnie Froderman locked up the title for the Knights with a 6-3, 6-6 (7-5) at No. 1 doubles. The fourth point came from Allie Melega at No. 2 singles.
"Last night we definitely did not play very well. South Putnam is a good team, just like Greencastle. But (the girls) stepped up today and they knew they had to. We talked about it (Friday night) and before the match (today), that Greencastle is a good team and the girls played extremely well today. I'm proud of all of them,"? Goff said.
"Our (number) two doubles have been strong all year and hasn't lost very many matches, so we knew we could count of them today. And (Ali Rentschler) had a great game and was hitting the ball well."
Northview's seniors Kellum, James, Kumpf and Mallory Heffner had played on four straight sectional championship teams.
"It meant a lot of us (seniors). We came out here this morning and said 'Come on girls we got to get this one. Let's make it four times and make sure these seniors got out with a (sectional) win.' The underclassmen really stepped it up. I know our junior singles played their heart out and our doubles really stepped it up,"? Kellum said.
