Although alcohol does not appear to be the factor, officials confirm they are still investigating the cause of an accident that sent a vehicle crashing into a tree, and a woman and child to a Terre Haute hospital Sunday afternoon.
Shortly before 1 p.m., Sunday, members of the Clay County Sheriff's Department, Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department and TransCare were dispatched to a single vehicle accident on the north side of United States Highway 40 just west of the intersection with County Road 550 West.
According to Deputy James Switzer, the vehicle apparently had been traveling eastbound when it crossed the median for unknown reasons into the westbound traffic lane and off the roadway striking a small tree.
The driver was found conscious and appeared to have minor injuries. The small child was crying, but appeared to have no injuries. As a safety precaution both were transported to Terre Haute Union Hospital for evaluation. No further information is available about their injuries.
The Brazil Times will update this story as more information becomes available.
