Wilbur W. "Mac" McCollister, 84, Valdosta, Ga., a veteran of World War II, died May 26, 2008, at Valdosta Hospital, of a massive heart attack.
He was a resident of Jacksonville, Fla., for more than 50 years, but had moved to Hahira, Ga., three months prior to his death to be near his only son, Daryl.
Mac was born to Ora Fred and Iva Opal McCollister South on the Knightsville Road, on the McCollister Farm, on Aug. 18, 1923.
He was raised in this area until 1942, being drafted from his job at P.R. Mallery in 1942. He was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945.
He first was employed in Hahira, Ga., and later moved to Jacksonville, Fla., to work as a long distance truck driver for many years, from which he retired.
He married Mildred Hall in 1941. There was one son from the union, Daryl Wayne McCollister, who survives.
He later married Dr. Nina Kyte, who preceded him in death in 1989.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ora and his wife, Dr. Nina Kyte.
He is survived by his son, Daryl and brother Don H. McCollister, Harmony, and other extended family members.
Cremation was chosen and Martin McLane Funeral Home, 2215 N. Paterson St., Valdosta, Ga., is handling arrangements.
