Wilbur W. "Mac" McColister, 84, a veteran of World War II, died May 26, 2008, at South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta, Ga., of a massive heart attack.
He was a resident of Jacksonville, Fla., for more than 50 years, but had moved to Hahira, Ga., three months prior to his death to be near his son, Daryl.
"Mac" was born Aug. 18, 1923, to Ora Fred and Iva Opal McCollister, south on the Knightsville Road, on the McCollister farm.
He was raised in the area until 1942, being drafted from his job at P.R. Mallory in 1942. He was discharged from the United States Army in 1945.
He first was employed at Hahira, Ga., and later moved to Jacksonville, Fla., where he was employed as a long-distance truck driver for many years until his retirement.
He married Mildred Hall in 1941. There was one son from the union, Daryl McCollister, who survives. He later married DeNina Kyte, who preceded him in death in 1989.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ora, and his wife DeNina.
He is survived by son Daryl and brother Don H. McCollister, Harmony, and other extended family members.
