Brazil Mayor explains delay of address

Thursday, May 29, 2008

Those waiting for the "State of the City" address will have to wait a little longer.

Brazil Mayor Ann Bradshaw told The Brazil Times that she began working on a PowerPoint presentation at the beginning of the year, but her involvement in helping to clear up the city's financial situation has put it on hold.

"I am waiting until we get our certified budget back and finish the final steps to straighten things out," she said. "You can't go out and tell people what you don't know for sure."

In recent years, the "State of the City" address has taken place in January in front of members of the Chamber of Commerce, but Bradshaw said making the address has always been at the mayor's discretion.

"The 'State of the City' does not necessarily have to be held every year," she said. "I don't recall former mayor (Norval) Pickett ever having one."

While the exact date of the potential address is still up in the air, Bradshaw wants to make sure she has all the correct information at her disposal before presenting it to the public.

"Elected officials, like myself, ought to be up front with the public," Bradshaw said. "You can't just put out information without having the concrete facts."

I recall William F Buckley saying that President Eisenhower "didn't do anything; but that's what we want the President to do." Is this what we expect from a mayor, too?

Brazil is very fortunate to have Ann Bradshaw as their Mayor, she is a caring and honest person!

Keep up the good job.
