He was born in Clay City, Feb. 19, 1933, to Howard J. and Thelma (Derdorf) Mitchel.
Following high school, he joined the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. After returning from the military, he began working for Lone Star Cement and retired after 40 years of employment.
On March 19, 1960, he married Altha Bryant.
He enjoyed watching or listening to NASCAR, fishing, gardening, traveling and spending time with his family, especially his grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Kenneth, Wayne and Ray.
Survivors include his wife, son and daughter-in-law Tom and Amy Mitchel, grandsons Jeramie and Derik Mitchel, brother Carl Mitchel, and sister Doroles Burnsworth, both of Kokomo, Ind.
Services will be at French Funeral Home, Thursday, at 10 a.m., with Pastor Bechtel officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Clay City.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday, from 4-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riley Children's Hospital, or St. Jude's Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
