SPENCER -- Bright sunshine cascaded over Monday's sectional golfers at Rolling Meadows Golf Course standing in stark contrast to conditions they've experienced for much of the season as well as during last year's sectional.
Terre Haute South heated up the Spencer course on the way to a return trip to the regional as well as a sectional championship.
Northview shot a 309 as a team, the same score that won the sectional last season. However, the Braves got a three-under par 69 from freshman Thomas Goss on the way to a winning score of 299.
"He's tough," said Northview coach Scott Buell of Goss. "He had a great round. South proved why they are the No. 9 team in the state."
The Knights meanwhile got outstanding rounds of 72 from Drew Snyder and a 73 from Kade Baker to lead the squad.
"I was very pleased with how we played," said Buell. "We were very balanced and a 309 was the same score we won with last year. I was real happy with how Drew and Kade played."
Snyder's round was good for second in individual standings with Baker tying with West Vigo's Evan Miller. Baker's round was the same as his winning score last year.
Northview's success was based on its balance with Matt Williams shooting an 81 and both Daniel Eaglin and Ryan Turner carding an 83.
"We've come together and we've got good depth," said Buell. "We struggled some early (this season), but we've come on at the right time."
The same could be said for the ninth-ranked Braves who also got a 76 from both Zach Hoskins and Ian White. Freshman Jackson Jarvis added a 78 and Phillip Myers shot an 81.
The Clay City Eels earned its first regional berth with a third-place finish last year, but came up a bit short this year with a fifth-place score of 342.
Dale Stoops led the team with an 84 and both Zach Boggs and Josh Strain shooting an 85. Braxton Griffith added an 88 and Dallas Graham shot a 110.
The Linton Miners will return to the regional after a one-year absence. George Fritch paced the Miners with a 76 as Linton shot a team score of 332 and edged out Terre Haute North's 337.
The Washington Regional takes place at Country Oaks Golf Course on Thursday with teams beginning play at 8:30 a.m.
"It's a new course for everybody," said Buell of the new regional site. "It's a shorter course so that should help us. There are some very good school's out of the Evansville-area."
Eighth-ranked Evansville Central is one of those schools, winning the Evansville Mater Dei Sectional with a round of 291. Castle placed second with a 294 and Evansville North shot 304. Joining them will be Jasper, Southridge, Perry Central, Gibson Southern, Princeton and Vincennes.
