FISHERS -- Mel Dumezich struck out 16 batters Tuesday, leading Whiting over Tecumseh 3-0 for an unbeaten season and the Indiana high school girls Class A softball championship.
It was the second title in three years for the Oilers (34-0), who scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning of the rain-interrupted game that began Monday night.
Tecumseh (25-5) managed only one hit off Dumezich.
Heavy rains forced delays and postponements of the semifinals and finals in all of the classes. In the only championship completed Monday night, Cass edged Bremen 2-1 for the Class 2A title. It was the second championship in three years for Cass (21-11). Pitcher Jenni Andrews of Bremen (23-9) received the Indiana High School Athletic Association 2A mental attitude award.
Whiting's Victoria Franco was the mental attitude award winner in the Class A final, which had been suspended with Whiting ahead 2-0 in the fifth inning Friday night.
The only hit off Dumezich was a single by losing pitcher Audra Sanders, who struck out 14 and walked two. All three runs off Sanders were unearned.
