She was born Sept. 5, 1930, in Dusseldorf, Germany, as the daughter of Heinrich and Gertrude Abels. As a young girl she worked in a bakery. She married Bernhard Joseph Nicklasch on Dec. 9, 1950.
In 1951, Helena and her husband immigrated to the United States. She was a member of the German Oberlander Club of Terre Haute and Tri Kappa Sorority.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Heinz Abels, her husband Bernhard who died Dec. 28, 2005, brothers-in-law, Heinz Otto Gensler and Howard Deane.
She is survived by three sisters, Christa Proba and husband Helmut, Hildagard Piepenbrink and husband Heinz and Truda Gensler, one brother, Josef Abels and wife Babel, one son, Bernd Nicklasch and wife Sally, Brazil, one daughter, Christel Walker and husband Randy, Terre Haute, sister-in-law, Irmgard Deane, Brazil, grandchildren, Mark Andrew, Brazil, Maria Elizabeth Heiliger and husband Matthew, Brazil, Rachelle Deane Winn and husband James, Terre Haute and Shane Michael Walker and fiancée Melissa Timmons, Terre Haute and great-grandchildren, Drake James Deane Winn, Wesley Charles Heiliger and Preston Ryan Heiliger.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, June 17, at Moore Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 18, at the funeral home, with Pastor Mark Grayless officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery.
