Larry G. Whaley, 56, Kentland, died at 1:05 p.m., Friday, June 27, 2008, at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., after a battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 5, 1952, in Rensselaer, and was the son of Marvin and Betty Whaley, of Brook.

On Aug. 5, 1973, he married Mary L. Woll, Brazil. She survives.

He graduated from South Newton High School in 1970, from Purdue University in 1974 and obtained a two-year degree from the School of Banking in Madison, Wis.

He worked in ag lending for 10 years before joining Kentland Bank in September 1986, where he became Senior Vice President, Chief Lending Officer and also directed the lending operations at three other branch locations.

He was a member of Trinity Church, Watseka, Ill., and was treasurer of the Kentland Chamber of Commerce. He had previously served on the Kentland Park Board, Newton County Fair Board and Zoning Appeals Board of Kentland.

He was an avid Purdue basketball fan, and enjoyed yard work, biking, tennis, power walking, jet skiing and being near the water.

He was preceded in death by brother John Charles Whaley.

Surviving with his wife are his son Brent Whaley and wife Jennifer, Indianapolis, daughters Ashley Whaley, Zionsville, and Megan Whaley, Kentland, sister Judy K. LeLiaert and husband Chris, Schererville, brother Tom J. Whaley and wife Kathy, Kentland, and father- and mother-in-law Everett and Mary Woll.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. (Central Standard Time), today, with services at 11 a.m. (CST) at Brook United Methodist Church, with Revs. David Gruhn and Sue Beckett officiating.

Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Book.

Gerts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
