Harmony Happenings

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

Warning to parents: As I was typing this early Wednesday morning, WTWO announced that a man tried to get a 4-year-old Harmony girl into his Ford Explorer. By the time this comes out, everyone will probably have heard that news but an extra warning is better than not hearing. At this time I don't have any additional information.

Harmony United Methodist is compiling a new prayer chain. Anyone wishing to change a phone number, or to volunteer, should contact the church at 448-2917.

HUMC is planning a homecoming in October. This will be the 150th Anniversary of the first church building. Previously, the Harmony congregation met in homes but, the services became so large, a church structure was needed. The first service in the new building was in 1858. The building was then on the north side of the National Highway. The church was 30 ft. by 40 ft. and cost a whopping $800 to build. In 1868, the congregation moved to the Village of Harmony at its current site. All former members and pastors of HUMC will be invited to return for this special celebration. Anyone wishing to work on a committee for the homecoming should contact Pastor Bob Kumpf.

Lena and Harmony churches are going to be scheduling family pictures for a directory. A committee will examine the samples and prices, from each photographer, before making a decision on which company will best serve the needs of the congregations.

Emma Clossen, the new intern at Harmony United Methodist Church and First Methodist, will lead a summer Women's Bible Study each week. The group will meet on Wednesday mornings from 9 to 10 o'clock in Fellowship Hall. They will study the book of James. All women are invited.

Vacation Bible School will be scheduled from Monday, July 21 to Friday, July 25 in the evenings (6 or 6:30 p.m.). It will be a combined program with First Presbyterian. The first three nights will be at Harmony and the next two nights will be at Presbyterian. A van will be available for anyone who needs a ride to either church. Directors for the new program will be Sarah Lawrence and Nicole Tipton. They have asked for volunteers to work with the children and provide snacks. Contact Sarah, Nicole, or one of the churches if you can be of assistance or make a donation.

The Crank's Creek Mission Trip is coming soon, Aug. 1-8. The approximate cost is $125. Contact Bill Green for more information (765) 653-5430.

HUMC is sending a care package to a local soldier serving in Iraq. On Sunday, please bring any items you wish to donate for the box. I don't have a list of necessities but some might include packaged snacks, wet wipes, lip balm, lotion, or sunscreen. Our soldier joked that we had sent so much candy last time that he would need Slim Fast this time. Maybe I can get a better list for the next package.

Pastor Bob's sermon for next Sunday will be titled, "The Mystery Exposed" and will be taken from Matthew 11: 16-19, 25-30. This past Sunday he encouraged us to be evangels by doing small acts of kindness with no strings attached. These acts might bring others to God. Show God's love by doing small practical things for others, expecting nothing in return. "… if anyone gives even a cup of cold water…he is my disciple…Matthew 10:42.

The Harmony Town Council meeting is rescheduled from the first week of July to the 8th. Meetings are held in the Community Center at the corner of Border Street and Highway 40. They start at 7:30 p.m.

Denny and I visited our good friends The Mangold's at Lake Helmerich on Monday. LaVerne prepared supper for us. She makes the best barbeque pork and cole slaw and apple pie. We ate on their sun porch overlooking the water. Bill gave us a pontoon ride around the big lake. It was a perfect day. We are blessed with good friends and family.
