The Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC recently selected another round of Community Fund grant recipients, including a few area organizations.
Area organizations selected to receive grants included the Coal City Community Volunteer Fire Dept., Eel River and Brazil Coonhunters Clubs, Jasonville Park Board, Center Fire Dept., Scotland Historical Society, Patricksburg Community Volunteer Fire Dept., White River Valley FFA, Turning Point Education Center, Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Dept., Greene County Sheriff's Office, Rock Haven Christian Camp, Bar P Ranch, Shining Stars Integrated Preschool and Indian Creek Firefighters, Inc.
The UDWI REMC Community Fund was created by the REMC Board of Directors to help strengthen its communities. Each month, as part of the program, participating members allow their electric bills to be rounded up to the next whole dollar. For example, if a member's bill is $116.57, it will be rounded up to $117. This means each member who participates pays less than $12 annually per meter.
The spare change collected through the "rounding up" process amounts to thousands of dollars per month. This money is all put into the Community Fund and local not-for-profit agencies are encouraged to apply for grants distributed on a quarterly basis
