NHS alumni in Drum and Bugle Corps

Monday, July 7, 2008

The Northview Marching Knights currently have two alumni that are involved with top national Drum and Bugle Corps.

Daniel Hayes, 2007 NHS graduate and a trumpet player, is currently marching with the Cadets while 2008 graduate Jessica Robertson, a member of the NHS guard, is marching with the Carolina Crown.

Both had to audition for spots in the groups.

Hayes earned a spot in the brass section for the Cadets, which is a nine-time DCI World Champion and famous for having a great brass section, Northview band director Bob Medworth said.

Medworth added Robertson was awarded a spot in the sabre and rifle line at Carolina Crown, which, according to Medworth, is one of the best color guards in the country and finished second at DCI last year.

Both Hayes and Robertson will spend their summers traveling close to 10,000 miles touring the country while competing at more than 35 competitions throughout the nation.

Medworth said a typical day for the two would be practice in the morning and afternoon, performance in the evening and then a four-five hour bus trip to the next competition while adding a few hours of sleep in between.

DCI Finals will take place in Bloomington at Indiana University's Memorial Stadium in August.

The event was scheduled to be the first event in Lucas Oil Stadium, but Medworth said Indianapolis pushed back the completion date of the stadium, forcing the move to Bloomington

I am not too surprised that we would have kids from NKM go on to such honors. The training and support they get while in school here prepares them for such activities!

KUDOS to you both! You are a positive role model!!!
