Fair looks for Beetles for parade

Thursday, July 10, 2008

GREENCASTLE -- Volkswagen owners are invited to join the Putnam County 4-H?Fair parade Friday, July 18, to participate in the fourth VW?Brigade.

Participants will be asked to meet at Greencastle Middle School July 18, between 5:30-6 p.m.

This is the fourth year for the Brigade that began with 18 of the German vehicles. Last year, the group grew to 38 vehicles and this year, organizer Dick Funk hopes to have at least 50 cars participating.

"I think the VW?parade helps hold the parade together,"?Funk said. "The kids want to see the beetles, so we scatter candy and make a mess."

Funk said decorating a vehicle and throwing candy during the parade are options.

The group joined the 4-H?parade after people began asking Funk, who owns DK?Beetle in Greencastle, and restores vintage Volkswagens. The chairman of the parade the year the vehicles were added happened to be a VW?owner, giving birth to the concept.

Any VW owner interested in driving in the parade with the Brigade should call Funk at 765-653-3466 for information or show up at Greencacstle Middle School July 18, from 5:30-6 p.m.
