Officials with the Indiana State Police Terre Haute post were off to a quick start Tuesday, attempting to beat the heat.

A handful of troopers paid a visit to the Clay Community Schools bus garage Tuesday to inspect 74 buses for the upcoming school year.

ISP Motor Carrier Officer for the Terre Haute Post Chuck Tharp said the six officers were at the garage by 6:30 a.m. and planned on getting at least half of the buses inspected.

"It could take as long as 20 minutes per bus," Tharp said of the inspection process. "We're shooting to get over half done (Tuesday) and finish (Wednesday)."

Tharp said the inspectors check buses in the ISP Terre Haute District, which spans five counties, including Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo.

The inspectors are scheduled to be in Clay County for two days.
