Thelma Marie Hayes, 91, formerly of Brazil and currently living in Crawfordsville, passed away, at 8 p.m., July 29, 2008, at the Whitlock House Assisted Living.

She was born in Southern Clay County, Feb. 6, 1917, to Joseph and Pearl (Bullerdick) Carter.

Mrs. Hayes worked as a cook at Perth and Bee Ridge Schools in Clay County as well as the Blue Bonnett, Mr. B's and Uncle Hanks Restaurants and the Clay County Jail. She also worked at the Clay County Senior Citizens Center. On April 17, 1937, she married Harry Rutherford Hayes. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harry Hayes and sister Kathryn Nixon.

Survivors include two daughters Karen Berry and husband Murvin, Sebring, Fla., and Janice Snyder and husband Steve, Crawfordsville, grandchildren John Phillips, Murvin Berry Jr. and wife Vicky, Jana Conn and husband John and Angela Campbell and husband Chris, eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and a sister Mary Jane Crabb and husband Jim.

Services will be at French Funeral Home, Aug. 2, 2008, at 4 p.m. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Saturday from 2 p.m. until time of services. Visit www.frenchfuneralhome.com to sign a heart of condolence.
