Bowling Green primed for 140th Old Settlers Picnic

Friday, August 1, 2008

A long-standing tradition in Clay County is turning 140.

The 140th Bowling Green Old Settlers Reunion Picnic is taking place Aug. 21-23, with many of the events in or around the Community Building.

"We are hoping for a big turnout this year," Old Settlers Reunion Committee President D.J. Smith Jr. said. "Even though gas prices are higher this year, people can still come out and have a good time."

Smith said the picnic will feature different entertainers this year including gospel music from The James Family Singers, humor from Myron James and Nathan Jenkins Bluegrass, which all run back-to-back-to-back from 7-9 p.m., the night of Aug 22.

One thing that started last year that will be returning is karaoke.

"A lot of the people seemed to enjoy it and had fun," Smith said. "So we decided to bring it back to the picnic this year."

Karaoke will be put on by Talent Limited Entertainment, which will have thousands of songs ranging from the 1940 through the top hits of today, and will be Thursday, Aug. 21, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Another favorite of the residents that always have a good turnout is the baby contest.

A total of four contests for the little ones will take place on Saturday, Aug 23, under the Community Building awning:

* 9 a.m. -- Baby contest (newborn-12 months),

* 9:45 a.m. -- Baby contest (13-24 months),

* 10:30 a.m. -- Toddler Contest (ages 2-3 years), and

* 11 a.m. -- Little Miss Contest (ages 4-6 years).

Other than the usual food booths that will be on hand throughout the picnic, there will be additional opportunities to purchase meals.

The Bowling Green United Methodist Youth Group will host a Ribeye Dinner Aug. 21, from 5-9 p.m., under the Community Building awning.

The meal, which costs $8, will include a six-ounce ribeye steak, baked potato, green beans, salad and a drink. Patrons will also have the option of purchasing a ribeye steak sandwich and drink for $5.

A Jonah Fish Fry and Chicken Noodle Dinner will be available from 4-8 p.m., Aug. 22 and 23, respectively. Both meals will cost $7.50 for adults and $4.50 for children aged 12 and under, with dessert available for an additional $1.

Also, the morning of Aug. 23, the Clay Lodge No. 85 will be hosting its 10th annual biscuit and gravy breakfast from 7-11 a.m. The price will be a freewill donation and all funds raised will go toward the upkeep of the lodge building.

As always, the picnic will have numerous arts and crafts booths, along with a flea market.

"We are still looking for people interested in setting up a booth," Smith said.

Those wanting to sign up for booth space may call Smith at 812-986-2964.
