The Bloomfield Cardinals played the role of spoiler on Wednesday night, defeating host Northview on opening night.
The Cardinals' tennis team posted a 3-2 win over Northview, repeating last year's result by the same score.
"Bloomfield is a very good team," said Knights' coach Mark Orr. "Their 1-2-3 singles players are fundamentally sound and they are very well coached."
In the No. 1 singles spot, Bloomfield's Derek Corn avenged last year's loss to Austin Akers by scoring a 6-2, 7-5 win against the Knights' senior.
"Austin had a chance to get it to a tiebreak in the second set, but fell short," said Orr.
The Cardinals won all three singles matches, which was the decisive aspect in the match.
Willy Scott downed Northview's Clint Reynolds, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Joel Oliphant won a 6-1, 6-3 match against the Knights' Trent Sims.
"The boys looked a little tentative on some shots," observed Orr afterwards. "I think this is because it was their first match this year. I did see some things I liked and some areas we can improve on."
The doubles results were much better for the Knights, who posted wins in both spots.
Carson Kleiber and Matt Nodley teamed to win a 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 match at No. 1 and Joey Thomas and Caleb Mershon won a 6-2, 6-2 match at No. 2 doubles.
"I think the doubles teams played very well," said Orr. "The boys have worked very hard in practice and we'll continue to improve over the course of the season."
Northview hosts Brown County on Saturday at 10 a.m.
