Lady Knights fall in season opening soccer game

Friday, August 22, 2008

Staff Reports

Northview's girls' soccer team scored in each half in the season opener against Terre Haute North, but the Patriots tallied three times in both halves of a 6-2 win.

The Patriots got on the board quickly behind freshman Molly McKee's long blast from 35-yards out in the first minute.

Northview answered back when freshman Krista Stearley responded on a breakaway following a through pass by senior Jenny Woodcox that tied the score at 1-apiece. From there however, it was the Patriots that capped the half with a pair of goals, both by Caitlin Wulf.

In the second half, the Patriots' Kelly Meggs scored her lone goal of the game despite the outstanding defensive effort of Hannah Pond.

Meggs scored six goals in her last game against Sullivan, but was considerably slowed by Pond's efforts on Thursday.

Trailing 4-1, the Knights cut the deficit in half when Carlee Bell took advantage of a direct kick following a foul. Bell drove her shot over the Patriots' wall and into the net to narrow the lead to 4-2.

From there however it was McKee adding a goal just 20 seconds after Bell's tally and Wulf capped her hat trick with the final score of the game.

For the Knights, Rachel Alstott had 15 saves in net and Cayla Yockey added three saves.

The Knights are back in action on Monday when they travel to Cascade for a 5 p.m. contest.
