BOWLING GREEN -- Amber Long and Pete Jackson got their oldest daughter, Cadence, started in area child pageants at an early age.

Although she's only 2, Cadence and her sister, Aubrey, both took part in the Bowling Green Old Settlers Picnic Toddler contest, along with a plethora of others.

The first contest, the Baby Contest, began at 9 a.m., Saturday. The final contest, the Little Miss Contest, ended just after 11 a.m.

And a tidal wave of parents brought their children to the events, which also included two Baby contests.

"It's just something everybody does and it's fun for the kids," Long said. "We always try to hit the festivals. We just stick in the general area.

"Every contest we've been in, they've gotten something. They have a little shelf. They each have their own."

Long said she has entered Cadence and Aubrey into contests at Coal City and Bowling Green, and plans to enter them in the contest at Saline City as well.

"It's fun to get them dressed up," Long said. "It only comes around once a year."

Macie Hardman, 2, daughter of Casey and Heather Hardman, also competed Saturday.

"It's just for fun," Heather said of having her daughter compete in the pageants. "She likes getting dressed up."

But for Landin Souder, Saturday's contest was a first.

Landin is not a year old yet, but parents Stacey Smith and Austin Souder elected to put him in the contest.

"He's just so darn cute," Stacey said of her son. "Plus other family members have (competed) in the past."

But Landin's first competition was memorable.

"He fell asleep," Smith said. "We walked up there and he was sleeping. It's kind of hard for the little ones because you have them on a schedule."

Oh sure, the little kids enjoy being in the pageant, just like dogs love being tied up in the backyard all day long. As usual, it's more about fulfilling the parents' wants than their charges' needs.
