Firefighters Union Local 1453 President Jake Bennett told The Brazil Times that Brazil City Firefighters will be collecting money for the 43rd Annual Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Telethon at the intersection of United States 40 and State Road 59 Saturday and Sunday.
Firefighters will be collecting money from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. both days.
"We raised more than $2,500 from the community during the Fill The Boot drive in 2007," Bennett said. "We're hoping to collect even more this year."
The International Association of Fire Fighters has supported the MDA's efforts to provide those afflicted with MD with helpful medical assistance and hope through medical research while providing public education since 1954.
Hosting the telethon since 1965, National Chairman Jerry Lewis will anchor the national portion of the telethon from Las Vegas, Nev., with some live segments broadcast from New York and Chicago, while local television stations across the country also contribute live segments for their local viewers during each hour of the show.
The program reaches 40 million viewers in the United States and Canada via more than 180 television stations in MDA's "Love Network," and can be seen worldwide on the Internet via RealNetworks at www.mda.org.
Pledges and donations made to the MDA Telethon in 2007 brought in a record $63.8 million in funding to help support MDA's research programs, services and education for children and adults with a form of muscular dystrophy or a related disease.
NOTE: The 43rd annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon airs on WTWO from 9 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 31, to 6:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 1.
