Staff Reports

RUSHVILLE -- Northview's cross country team got a good early test over the weekend, competing at the Rushville Invitational.

Both squads showed great improvement from their first meet of the season. The boys' team got a seventh-place finish from Conor Strain as the team placed eighth in the 14-team field while the girls got a balanced effort on the way to a fifth-place out of 18 teams.

Columbus North showed why it is one of the state's cross country powers as the third-ranked boys' team took the team title with 35 points and the fifth-ranked girls were dominating winners with 30 points. Pike was second in both team races, scoring 61 in the boys' race won by their own Michael Jordan in 16:43. The Pike girls were a distant second with 127 points. East Central's Kristal Studer was the winner in 19:31.

The Northview girls were led by Alyssa Conrad's 23rd-place finish in 22:05 and Casandra Barnett scored a 34th-place in 22:22. Allie True was close behind in 37th with a time of 22:38, Shelby Sands was 50th in 23:07, Nicole Nelson was 60th in 23:36 and Corey Laue was 68th in 23:55.

Northview's girls' coach, Ryand Tucker, was happy with his team's performance over the weekend.

"The girls ran well today. They should be very pleased with themselves, I am," exclaimed coach Ryand Tucker concerning his team's effort. "Each of them achieved a season best today. It was evident today by their time drop, that Alyssa, Shelby, and Nicole are beginning to learn how to race the 5K."

Strain's time of 17:16 was the top time for the Northview boys on Saturday. Ryan Lutes came home with a 35th-place in 18:34.

The Knights packed in the next three runners with Eli Kirby placing 51st in 19:43, James Trackwell was 53rd in 19:48 and Tanner Brown totok 59th in 20:06.

Wrapping up the Knights' effort was a 73rd from Kyle Yocom in 21:16 and an 81st-place by EC Moody in 21:44.

The Knights are back in action today at Terre Haute South in a three-way meet including North Central.
