SPENCER -- The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) recently opened the bridge over Fish Creek on State Road 46 in Owen County.
The bridge, located approximately four miles west of Spencer had been closed since June 7, when flooding undercut piers and the foundation of the structure.
Repair work, however, has now been completed.
Since INDOT wanted to open the bridge to traffic as soon as possible, the opening was accomplished before the completion of the project. As a temporary aid to motorists, INDOT constructed a gravel run-around so that vehicles could bypass the damaged bridge and not have to use the official detour, which included United States 231, Interstate-70 and SR 46 in Terre Haute.
The run-around crossed private property with the owner's permission. However, clean-up efforts have begun to take out the run-around and should be completed within the next few weeks.
