Ernestine S. Kester, 86 of Brazil died September 8, 2008 at the Clay Health Center. She was born February 14, 1922 in Harmony, IN. the daughter of Ernest C. Snell and Sally McIntyre Snell. She graduated from Van Buren High School, Class of 1940. She continued her education with a B.S. Degree in Art, English and Commerce in 1944 and M.S. Degree in Art Education and Supervised Teaching in 1953 at Indiana State University. She taught art and reading 24 years at Deming Jr. High School in Terre Haute and taught art 11 years at Honey Creek Jr. High also in Terre Haute. She was a Supervising Teacher at both schools for students at ISU and St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She retired after 35 years of teaching in Vigo County. She was a devoted wife, mother and was affectionately known as 'Grandma Ernie' to her granddaughters and many others.

Mrs. Kester had many memberships including, Clay County 4-H, Harmony United Methodist Church; ISU Grand Society of Sycamores; Vigo Co, Indiana and National Retired Teachers Association; Art Education Association of Indiana; Kappa Pi Honorary Art Fraternity; Omega Sigma Chi Social Sorority; National Education Association; Indiana Federation of Art Clubs; International Platform Association; Charter member of the National WWII Memorial Commission.

Following retirement, Mrs. Kester spent her spare time painting, reading, and traveling with the International Platform Association to Denmark, Egypt, Austria, Russia, Sweden, England, China, Japan and Hong Kong.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Robert L. Kester in July of 2003 after 53 years of marriage; one brother Maurice Kibbie Snell.

Survivors include her daughters Sharman Woll of Brazil and Shari Voeltz and husband Donald of Wisconsin; two granddaughters, Jamie Brinkman and husband Shawn of Brazil and Julie Wheaton and husband John of Terre Haute; 5 great-grandchildren, Macy Brinkman, Bode Brinkman, Piper Brinkman, Brandt Wheaton and Luke Wheaton; sister Georgetta Lucas of Avon; sister-in-law Vivien Snell of Terre Haute; several nieces and nephews, Dr. Ronald Snell, Dr. Alan Snell, Tom Snell, CPA, Deanna Wells, Joyce Thompson, Tom Lucas, Carleen Underwood, Joetta Allgood, and Janie Steele.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at French Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Alstott officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8pm and again Friday prior to services.
