Wabash Valley Red Cross hosting Family Fun and Safety Fair

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

TERRE HAUTE -- The United States Department of Homeland Security and the American Red Cross are hosting a series of events to mark the fifth "September is National Preparedness Month."

As one element of the effort, the American Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter is sponsoring the community's fifth annual Family Fun and Safety Fair, scheduled from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, at the parking lot in front of Paitson Brothers Ace Hardware, 2700 Wabash Ave., Terre Haute.

Attendees may receive free blood pressure checks, give blood, meet Chaca the arson dog, see inside a fire engine, play games, learn about tornados, get their child fingerprinted, learn how to shelter in place, learn what to do in poisoning emergencies and talk with Spark the Fire Dog.

Those who plan to attend may also register to win a free three-day disaster supply kit.

The Red Cross will have five Be Red Cross Ready Activity Stations set up for youth as well. At each station, youngsters will learn a different safety skill in a fun, interactive way. Youth who complete all stations will receive a certificate for a free hot dog and Pepsi at the food wagon as well as a certificate from the American Red Cross showing they have completed all stations.

The Be Red Cross Ready activity stations will provide children the opportunities to:

* Learn how to wrap a wound,

* Draw a map of their house creating an escape route,

* Learn how to prepare for tornados,

* Learn how to bandage with gloves and remove the gloves without coming into contact with body fluids, and

* List ways to volunteer for the Red Cross.

Families may enjoy lunch at the Pepsi wagon. For $1, patrons will receive a hot dog, Pepsi and a bag of Frito-Lay chips. All proceeds from the food sales will go to help with the cost of the event.

In addition to the American Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapters, participants include the Indiana Blood Center, Terre Haute Fire Department, Honey Creek Fire Department, Arson Task Force, Indiana State University School of Nursing, Poison Control, Duke Energy, Pepsi, Time Warner Cable and Paitson Brothers Ace Hardware/Just Ask Rentals.
