14-year-olds have banner season

The Clay Youth League 14-year-old All-Star team capped a banner season with an 11-3 record.

The squad, composed of T.J. Decker, Kole Smith, Tyler Wilson, Zach Hull, Jordan Girton, Cole Watts, Bryant Pestoff, Coleman Craig, Ben Denker, Travis Hakman, Bricen White and Stephen Watts, won District 6 this year after knocking off Valle Field, 7-0, in the title bout.

The local squad also beat Owen Valley twice in the District Tournament and was 4-1 in tourney play.

In the State Tournament, conducted at Evansville, the 14-year-olds finished 3-2, picking up a 6-5 win over Jasper, a 20-8 win over Brown County, and an 11-4 win over Evansville.

However, the local squad lost to Gibson Southern in the title game, 6-5.

In the Greensburg Tournament, the local team was 4-0, picking up wins over the Terre Haute Heat (8-7), Louisville Vipers (6-4), Noblesville Millers (8-5) and the Vipers in the championship, 12-2.

For the year, the 14-year-olds scored 133 runs, averaging 9.5 runs per game, while giving up only 67.

Pestoff led the team in hitting, going 22-for-41 (.537) while tallying an on-base percentage of .780.

Decker also hit .511 (23-of-45) while Wilson hit .452 (14-for-31), while accumulating a .774 on-base percentage.

Decker was also 6-1 on the mound while Craig was 3-1. Craig also led the team in home runs with five while Hull had three. Wilson finished with two.

The team was managed by Cyle Watts and coached by Joe Hakman and Kirk Smith.

Did everyone know that Cyle is a professional poker player and also played in the WSOP in Las Vegas.

Congratulations 14-year-olds on a great season! It was unfortunate that Zach Hull had to miss some district games and all but one state game including the championship because of travel ball in Tennessee. Hopefully next year they'll all be together and will bring home another state championship to Clay County.
