The Northview varsity tennis team bounced back from a close defeat Tuesday with a decisive 4-1 victory over West Vigo at home Thursday.

The Knights got straight set victories from all victorious players. Doubles tandem Matt Nodley and Caleb Mershon beat West Vigo's Garrett Rood and Brady McCalister 6-0, 6-1, while the duo of Caleb Andrews and Joey Thomas took down Stephen Engle and TC Wampler 6-3, 6-1.

In singles play, Clint Reynolds and Carson Kleiber got respective 6-2, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-0 victories against Austin Tewell and Dylan Roe. Northview coach Mark Orr said after his team's loss to Edgewood Tuesday that they needed to improve overhead shots and that after an intense Wednesday practice session, his team vastly improved in that area.

The only loss of the night for the Knights came when West Vigo's Joel Modesitt, the state's No. 11-ranked player, defeated Austin Akers 6-1, 6-1.

In defeat, Orr was very supportive of his player's effort against a very tough opponent.

"Austin played very well," Orr said. "He said he was going to bring it and he did. But (Modesitt) is one of the best players in the state."

The victory upped the Knights record to 7-3. Orr said he saw the team make significant strides with each passing match and that he thought they would be ready to make an impact by the time postseason play rolls around in October,

"The kids are really starting to focus in on what we're trying to accomplish as a team," Orr said. "By sectional time, we're going to be a force to contend with,"

The Knights will take the weekend off before returning to action Monday when they host South Vermillion for Senior Night.
