Merietta Spears, 70, Terre Haute, formerly of Clay County, passed away at her residence Sept. 18, 2008, at 8:30 a.m., after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her children and family members.

She was born Aug. 15, 1938, in Paragould, Ark., the daughter of Gilbert Franklin Jackson and Mary Evelyn Carmack Jackson.

On Nov. 13, 1956, she married William Daniel Spears in Grand Rapids, Mich. She attended the Church of Christ and had the love of Christ in her life.

Merietta was a nurse aide and later a homemaker. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, feeding squirrels, fishing, and loved all animals.

The family would like to thank all her Doctors and staff at the Hope Center and Regional Hospital and also the staff of Hospice of the Wabash.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William Daniel Spears, Sr. in 1971, a son, William Daniel "Billy" Spears, Jr., two brothers, Dannie Gale Jackson and Gilbert Franklin Jackson, Jr., five grandchildren and a son-in-law.

She is survived by her children, Donald Ray Spears and wife Desi, David Wayne Spears, Robert "Bobby" Gale Spears and Jean, Ricky Joe Spears and Cindy Williams, Brenda Joyce Allen and husband Leonard, Donna Jean Hatheway and husband Herb, Cindy Lee Gibson, Marylou Davis, and Terrie Lynn Atkinson, three sisters, Wilma, Patsy, and Judy, 30 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, two step-children, Patty England and Ronnie Allen, many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at 11 a.m., at Lawson-Miller Chapel with Pastor Chris Gregg officiating. Burial will follow in Bee Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, from 4-8 p.m., and prior to services on Monday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hope Center or Hospice of the Wabash Valley, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
