Northview student a National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalist

Friday, September 19, 2008

Devin Ahern
Most high school seniors are looking to the future and ways to pay for it.

Devin Ahern is one of those students.

Ahern, a senior at Northview High School, is a National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalist and is one of 1,600 students competing for one of the National Achievement Scholarships.

"It's really cool," Ahern told The Brazil Times. "Scholarship money is always a good thing."

Ahern is the son of Carol and Mike Ahern, both of Brazil, and the grandson of Harriet Virostko of Rosedale. Ahern has applied to Northwestern and wants to study Math and Physics.

"I'm really looking forward to college," he said. "I can't wait to take the classes."

Ahern plays the Alto Saxophone in Jazz Band and for the Northview Marching Knights, and he also enjoys playing the guitar in his spare time.

He is also involved in the Academic Super bowl Math and Science teams and the interdisciplinary team, Spanish Club and National Honor Society. Ahern is also currently attending Rose Hulman Institute of Technology for a math class.

He was selected as a semifinalist based on his scores through the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

"We (the faculty and staff) are very proud of Devin for achieving this level, which reflects all of his hard work and the work of our teachers and the support of his parents," Northview Principal Tim Rayle told The Brazil Times. "We wish him the best in his quest to become a Finalist for a National Merit Scholarship."

"Everyone is so excited," Carol told The Brazil Times. "He has worked very hard for this and we are so proud of him."

Ahern will be notified in January if he qualifies as a Finalist.

Congrats to you, Devin!!! And they say that the schools aren't giving quality educations-I guess it depends on who the student is and how much effort is put into it. Way to go Devin!!! Good luck in your quest for a National Merit Scholarship...and at Northwestern next year.
