Pull together for those in need

Sunday, September 21, 2008

To the Editor:

The floodwaters in the surrounding counties have receded.

Our bridges over Doe Creek and Cataract Lake, Jackson Township Owen County, are both open again.

The crisis for many has not ended. There are individuals and families still waiting for some kind of or any assistance. Homes totally destroyed or damaged, some beyond repair.

And those that possibly could be repaired require hundreds of dollars in repairs that many in our area cannot afford. Not everyone meets the criteria for help from the federal agencies.

It has been reported to the Cunot Community/Senior Center that we have families, children and older individuals sleeping on floors.

The Cunot Community/Senior Center would like to put out an appeal to Owen and surrounding counties. We need new or gently used household goods.

Appliances (stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers), small appliances like microwaves, coffee makers, toasters, toaster ovens, electric skillets, etc., dishes, silverware, pots and pans, beds and bedding, kitchen, living room and bedroom furniture.

Keep in mind, these folks may have lost everything.

The Cunot Community/Senior Center will act as a drop off point and we will work with the Rebuild Owen County Committee (ROCC), the community partnership for long-term flood recovery.

ROCC caseworkers will evaluate the need of each individual or family and the items donated will be distributed according to need.

Please donate only appliances that are working and useable household items and bedding.

Let's all pull together and help these folks get back on their feet. It could have been one of us.

All donations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Cunot Community

/Senior Center,

Thelma Trowbridge, Secretary
