With a veteran squad returning from last year's regional-qualifying team, it might come as no surprise that the Northview girls' golf team is once again bound for the Martinsville Regional. The Lady Knights fired a 373 Saturday at Forest Park to finish third in sectional.

What is notable about this year's squad, though, is how they did it. Gone is the performance of Mary Beth Tribble, who fired a 79 last year on her way to medalist honors.

Instead, this year's squad relied on solid, consistent play across the board, with the four scorers ranging from 85 to 103.

"That's one thing about our team. We haven't had a real low scorer for the majority of the year, but we've been very consistent and able to get some solid numbers in there," Knights coach Josh Trout said.

The Knight effort was spearheaded by a pair of low rounds for the year from Olivia Oehler and Alli Trout.

"I was very pleased with Olivia Oehler shooting an 85; that's her best of the year. Also, Alli Trout finished with her best of the year (103) for our fourth score. I was very happy for those two, along with Savanah (Pursell) and Mandy (Thomlinson) shooting very solid scores," Coach Trout said.

Olivia Oehler finishes high as her approach shot on No. 9 flies toward the green. Oehler was the Knight's low scorer with an 85.
Thomlinson fired a 90 on the day, while Pursell added a 95. Hayley Miller also had a 105 for Northview.

Any team goes into a sectional wanting to win, but the coach was pleased that his team is surviving another week.

"It's always nice to advance. Even though you don't win, it's nice to move on to the regional," Trout said. "It's a great honor for the school and for these girls. I know they've really been hoping for that. We're excited about next week and we're looking forward to going down to Martinsville."

On Saturday, winning would have been a tall order. Terre Haute South came in the dominant team in the area, and they displayed it on Saturday. Their top three golfers all shot in the 70s, as the Braves tallied a 323, a score 25 shots lower than second-place Terre Haute North.

But from here, it gets even more difficult for everyone. The Martinsville regional is a two-headed monster. Not only is host course Foxcliff extremely challenging, the level of competition is even more fierce.

"It is a very difficult course. The nice part is, four out of these five girls went down there and played last year, which was our first year there, so we have a little more experience going down to this course," Trout said. "Last year was a learning experience, so I expect our scores to improve from last year now that we're a little more familiar with the course.

"It will be very tough competition with Martinsville, Avon and Columbus North all in the top-10 in the state," he continued. "There is quite a bit of competition when you head down there. We're just going to work hard this week and see how things turn out."

The Martinsville Regional begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Foxcliff Golf Club.
