County bands gear up for ISSMA

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

The "real" competition begins for the Marching Knights of Northview and the Imperial Regiment of Clay City this weekend.

Both bands will take part in the Indiana State School Music Association District contest at Southport High School Saturday.

Clay City heads into district competition off the heels of a first-place finish at Greenwood Sept. 27. However, Imperial Regiment Band Director Mark Ziegler is aware of the stiff competition the band will be facing Saturday.

"Tri-West is going to be our main competition," Ziegler said. Tri-West won at Avon Sept. 27, another contest the Imperial Regiment competed in, coming away with second.

Ziegler said the band worked feverishly Monday evening putting together the final touches on its 2008 show, "Child's Play," which was written by former Northview Assistant Band Director Pete Kikta.

"We put it together in the rain," Ziegler said. "Now it's just polishing what we put on the field."

The Imperial Regiment will take to the field at 11:39 a.m., Saturday, in Class D competition. Other bands competing in the class at Southport include North Decatur, Triton Central, Tri-West and Eastern (Pekin).

Ziegler said he wants to place added emphasis on show music this week in preparation for Saturday's contest.

"Music is going to be the top priority," he said. "We've been focusing on music quite a lot."

The Marching Knights head into Saturday's district competition after receiving a second-place finish at Brownsburg Sept. 27.

Northview takes the field Saturday at 2:41 p.m., behind the remaining Class B bands.

Still, NHS Band Director Bob Medworth does not feel that is an advantage for the Marching Knights.

"With that few bands, the judges should be able to get it right," Medworth said. "The problem with District is that there are seven or eight sites in Indiana alone, not to mention all the other marching band contests in the Midwest this weekend. The talent pool of judges gets stretched pretty thin.

"All the judges are good people with talent. The problem is consistency from week to week or even contest to contest. Last Saturday, one band's score in our class jumped eight points between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. You don't get eight points better by riding the bus to a different contest."

Medworth said he expects difficult competition from the other Class B bands Saturday.

"They are all good bands, taught by good band directors," Medworth said. "Each of us chooses a little different way to approach marching."

Medworth said the Marching Knights are in the process of making corrections to the show.

"We are fixing the beginning of the show," he said, "which has been a bad moment for us all along, and we knew it. You just have to find time to schedule in the changes and adjustments and prioritize which ones and in which order, so we've had to live with a less than stellar beginning for the past two weeks.

"I think if all goes well, by the time we get to Saturday afternoon, we'll be in pretty shape. Certainly, we get better each week."

Last year, both bands received gold ratings in district competition.

In addition to Class D and B bands, Class C bands competing at Southport Saturday include Edgewood and Beech Grove. Class A bands include Avon, Center Grove and Franklin Central.

On Oct. 11, Clay City will compete at Center Grove and Ben Davis while Northview will compete at Indiana State University.

ISSMA Regional competition is set for Oct. 18, as both bands will compete in Jeffersonville.

If Clay City advances to the semistate, it will compete at Franklin Community, while Northview will take part in the Warren Central Semistate event on Oct. 23.

The State Finals are scheduled for Nov. 1 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
