When your celebrating Senior Night, there's no better way to cap the night then with a victory.
On Tuesday night, the Northview boys' soccer team did just that, getting a pair of goals from senior Brandon Hathaway and a shutout in net from senior Cainan Reeves to post a 5-0 win over Sullivan.
The victory was also a Western Indiana Conference win that improved the Knights to 5-1 in the WIC.
"This was a nice win for the seniors and a nice conference win on Senior Night," said coach Don Bryan. "It was a nice performance and this was great for the seniors. This has been a real good team and they get along really well."
Northview's senior laden roster includes Hathaway, Mark Reed, Ken Wright, Logan Lynch, Evan Deal, Nick Hensler, Michael Ball, Brenan McCullar, Robert Plummer and Reeves.
The visiting Arrows countered with a roster that included 10 freshmen.
Northview pressured the Arrows mercilessly and got on the board quickly as Michael Ball's pass to Hathaway was just in the nick of time. Hathaway got his foot under the ball in the penalty box, chipping a shot over the keeper and into the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Logan Lynch kept the pressure on the Arrows, lofting a pass ahead to Hathaway just minutes later, but the shot was saved.
Less than two minutes later, it was Hathaway again getting free with plenty of daylight between himself and the net.
This time however he was slide tackled from behind, drawing a whistle and a penalty kick at the 28:16 mark.
Plummer toed the line and ripped a shot to the top right of the net to put the Knights up by two goals.
Lynch was back on the attack a couple of minutes later, ripping a shot just wide.
With the first round of substitutions coming midway through the half, Josh Lynch got into the mix when his chip shot off a long throw-in was just wide of the target.
At the 12:09 mark it was Nick Hensler's deft footwork that resulted in a steal from an Arrows' ball handler. Hensler lofted a 30-yard shot from just outside of the box that dropped under the crossbar for the Knights' third goal.
The second half was more of the same for both teams.
The Knights came out aggressive and focused on maintaining the shutout and keeping the balance of play in the Arrows' defensive zone.
Drew Snyder got the action started with a long boot into Sullivan's end where McCullar got his head on the ball, directing it towards the net. The Arrows' keeper was able to get the ball moments before McCullar to stave off another score.
McCullar would not be denied on this night however.
The senior poked in a crossing shot across the goalmouth to provide the fourth goal of the game at the 29:44 mark.
Wright and Logan Lynch each had shots on net over a short period before Hathaway found the net for his second of the night.
With 18:48 left in the game, Hathaway and Josh Lynch were each battling defenders for possession of the ball in the box when the ball squirted free. Hathaway was first on the scene and stuffed the shot home for a 5-0 lead.
The Knights had several more close calls down the stretch, but weren't able to add to the five goal total.
"If you put this team on paper, it stacks up with anyone," said Bryan. "We're going to have some big holes to fill next year without these seniors."
Northview travels to Terre Haute North for sectional play on Oct. 9 for a 6 p.m. contest.
