As Jackson Township Elementary School's students and staff members cheered and gave her a standing ovation, fourth-grade teacher Nanette Brown realized she was the winner of the 2008 Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year.

Former student and current Brazil Wal-Mart Manager Jeremy O'Leary presented Brown the award in a surprise ceremony in the gymnasium.

"(Brown) was my favorite teacher when I was a student here," O'Leary said during his speech. "She taught me all the right things and made sure I knew everything I needed to know to pass."

Although there were many entries for local teachers dropped off at the local Wal-Mart, O'Leary said Brown had the most nominations and, "I'm proud to be able to present this award to her."

"I'm shocked," Brown told the crowd, which included several of her family members. "I'm honored to receive this. And I want to say that there is no better place to be a teacher than here."

Principal Jeff Fritz, who has worked with Brown since they began their careers at JTE 26 years ago, said she deserves the recognition.

"Nanette is a very special teacher," Fritz said. "She goes out of her way to make sure every student in her class has the opportunity to excel and do their best."
