An inspired Northview tennis team claimed its third consecutive sectional title Saturday with a dominant 5-0 win over Linton.

The Knights took less than one hour to claim the sectional title with all singles and doubles participants earning straight set victories. Assistant coach Shawn Hughes said he was happy to see his players bring such a competitive streak to the post season.

"It's nice to see our players play their best when it counts the most," Hughes said.

In singles, Austin Akers took down the Miners' Chase Rhoten 6-1, 6-0; Clint Reynolds defeated Seth Herndon 6-1, 6-2 and Carson Kleiber was able to earn consecutive 6-3 victories over Kristopher Shipman. Reynolds, a senior, who has been part of all three of the Knights consecutive sectional triumphs, expressed gratitude for the chance to be part of such a successful run.

"It feels good," Reynolds said. "We've had some good teams in recent years and it's nice to see so much success."

Northview's dominating doubles team continued their dominance. Caleb Mershon and Matt Nodley defeated Linton's Luke Knight and Kyle Cooper 6-2, 6-1 while Caleb Andrews and Joey Thomas didn't lose a single game to their opponents Taylor Sloan and Ben Brown.

Head coach Mark Orr said that if his doubles teams could continue to play at a high level he liked his team's chances against any competition.

This win was Orr's first as Northview's coach. He replaced Tom West, who resigned after last season. Orr said he was proud to see all the progress his team made in both singles and doubles play.

"Our kids are definitely playing with more confidence," Orr said. "We are making shots now that we weren't making at the beginning of the season."

Going into regionals, the seemingly underdog Knights will be competing against a tougher breed of competition. However, Orr said that with the strides his players have taken, there is no reason to think that victory at the next level is beyond them.

"Anything can happen," Orr said. "These kids can play, and I wouldn't be shocked for whatever happens."

The Knights will travel to play Indianapolis Roncali in the Center Grove Regional on Tuesday.
