He was born, July 31, 1939, in Clay City, and graduated from Clay City High School.
He was a member of the Army National Guard and worked for Peabody Coal Company retiring in 1998. Jerry was an excellent wood craftsman. He made beautiful furniture and children's toys. He was a great neighbor in his north side neighborhood.
He was preceded in death by his parents Orville and Mary (Hayman) Schlegel.
Survivors include his companion/spouse for the last 20 years Jane (Wilhite) Schlegel, daughters, Kathy Hartman (Tim), Hillsdale, Ind., Kristy Griffin (Jeff Hayes), Bloomington, son, Jay Schlegel, Cory, brothers, Robert Schlegel (Beryl), Brazil, and Arthur Schlegel, Plainfield, sister, Phyllis Kincaid (Doyle), Avon, brother-in-law Gary Wilhite, mother-in-law Mary Wilhite, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends will gather Monday, Oct. 13, from 4-8 p.m., and Tuesday, from 10-11 a.m., at the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis. The funeral service will be Tuesday, Oct. 14, starting at 11 a.m., at the mortuary.
