Foster care service in need of volunteers

Monday, October 13, 2008

Foster Care Select is in need of help.

"We need foster parents in the area," Sharon Jackson Support Staff Coordinator told The Brazil Times.

Foster Care Select is a program of the Dunn Mental Health Center, Inc., which places children with special needs.

"We work in conjunction with the Department of Child Services (DCS)," Jackson said. "We have free monthly training."

The Foster Care Select website states that they need caregivers who can meet the children's serious physical, medical and emotional needs and help them learn to trust and form healthy relationships, they need to be part of a loving family.

"We are part of a team," Jackson said. "Foster parents would work with case coordinators, therapist, psychologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, department of child's services staff, school personnel and other community service providers to provide support for the child."

The website also states that the program provides clinical case coordinators that are available by pager for support and/or consultation 24 hours a day, specialized training on caring for children with disabilities, respite care, meeting with a case coordinator at least twice a month, non-taxable reimbursement, an appreciation bonus after 365 days, and a referral fee.

Foster Care Select is based out of Bloomington and covers southern Indiana.

They will be having a Fall Festival on Oct. 18, in Mitchell, Ind., at Cedar Hill Catering from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

"We picked Mitchell because it is in the center of our region." Jackson said.

"It is free to the public and we would love for people to come."
