TERRE HAUTE -- Northview fans expecting a replay of the previous meeting between the Knight and Greencastle got a pleasant surprise at Tuesday's soccer sectional opener. Northview came out and pressed the Tiger Cubs, but ultimately fell short, losing 1-0.

It was clear from the beginning of the contest that the Knights were not going to be playing on their heels. From the first whistle, Northview clogged the middle and kept the Tiger Cubs struggling to penetrate for much of the first half.

Northview head coach Tony Alstott was pleased with the team's effort after the contest and thought the team made some great strides from their last match up with the Tiger Cubs.

"Our goal was to come out here and win," Alstott said. "We knew that the team that showed up and lost 7-1 to Greencastle in the middle of the season was not the team we have. We have a better team than that. I told them that if they wanted to prove they had a better team than they had before, they had to come out on the field and show it and they showed it tonight. They played a great game."

In the first half, Greencastle had multiple shots on goal, but senior Rachel Alstott was a wall, not allowing a shot to find the net the entire half. Greencastle's best chance at a goal came with 19:15, but again it was Alstott that lift the ball high enough to catch the top bar. The teams entered the half without a score.

The beginning of the second half saw a high-energy Greencastle squad take the pitch and put some pressure on the Knights. The Tiger Cubs penetrated the Knights' defense throughout the night, but were unable to find the net. Greencastle's Melissa Bell changed that early in the second half.

Ball sliced her way to the goal and rocketed a shot past Alstott, giving GHS the 1-0 lead.

The remainder of the game saw the Knights continuing to attack, but Greencastle's one goal would stand up. In a final symbol of support, the Northview fans cheered their team on as the clock ticked down to all zeros.

After the contest Alstott noted that Greencastle was an excellent team and that his girls did a good job playing the Tiger Cubs so hard.

"My goalkeeper really stepped it up," Alstott commented. "Cayla Yockey was injured at the Greencastle game during the season and this was her first game back. She was out three or four weeks and that's my sweeper and she played a great game. She played with a lot of heart. Tiffany Young did well. Carlee Bell and Jenny Woodcox are my two forwards and they played well.

"We needed some scoring opportunities and they just shut that down," he concluded.
