The North Clay seventh-grade boys' basketball teams upped their records to 2-0 on the young season by downing Sarah Scott on Thursday night.

Scoring was at a premium early in the 'A' game before the Knights turned up their defense and got enough offense to open a 12-point first half lead on the way to a 38-22 victory.

The Knights forced 11 first-half turnovers and Nate Newton scored six points before half while Kyle Moore ripped the nets for seven in the fourth quarter of the win. Defense was key in the second-half surge as Moore knocked down three straight jumpers in a short span of the third quarter.

Newton's shooting prowess virtually closed the door on the Scotties as the lead grew to 27-11 heading into the final quarter.

Sarah Scott's Tyler Dobbins proved to be a dominant force in the paint, pounding the boards for 16 rebounds and altering shot after shot. However, Newton's outside shooting led to a team-high 12 points and Moore dropped in seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter of the victory.

Dobbins' size and rebounding ability eliminated many quality second chance shots for the Knights, but North Clay shut down the rest of the Scotties, who got just nine points from the rest of the team.

Ian Heffner added six points for North Clay and Daniel Kimball had a block, two points and two rebounds in the first quarter. Jim Mace had four points and a team-high six rebounds.

In the 'B' game, North Clay pulled away in the third quarter, also with its defense, to take a 33-20 decision.

After being tied at 8-all at halftime, North Clay amped up its full court defense and started taking the ball to the basket with purpose. Kelly Hawkins had a steal and eight of his 10 points in the pivotal third period and Mark Underwood had eight of his nine points in the fourth quarter. Tyler Rector had six points in the win and Austin Butts added five rebounds and two points.

The North Clay 'A' team improved to 2-0 overall with the 'B' team evening its mark at 1-1. The teams travel to St. Pats on Nov. 10 at 6 p.m.
