William Thomas "Tom" White, 71, Brazil, died unexpectedly Nov. 12, 2008, at 11:35 p.m., at St. Vincent Clay Hospital.

He was born Aug. 17, 1937, in Vigo County, the son of Mervil Ray White and Sarah Kathryn Tucker White.

He graduated from Otter Creek High School.

Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. On Jan. 18, 1963, he married Sharon Morge White.

She preceded him death on Jan. 30, 2002.

Tom had a long career with the prison system, beginning as a guard, then correctional officer and retired as a counselor at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility at Carlisle in 1999.

Tom always liked music, singing and was a square dance caller. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with wood.

He was a talented wood craftsman and had made several items for family, including dollhouses for the granddaughters.

He was a card player, both Euchre and pinochle, and spent time at the Outdoor Recreation Club in Seelyville.

He was a member of the F &AM Lodge No. 529, Eagles Lodge No. 291, American Legion Post No. 104, Moose Lodge of Brazil, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, The Kerman Grotto and the Marine Corp. League.

Survivors include his daughter Jean Tanner, Brazil, son Bo White, Bloomington, best friend Rhonda Catterson, Brazil, grandchildren Breanna Langley and husband Anthony, Cory, Ethan Tanner, Brazil, Dabryn Tanner, Brazil, and Tayler White, Terre Haute, brother Jim White and wife Janet, Terre Haute, sister Shirley Johnson, Chicago, brother-in-law Dave Morge and wife Rogene, sister-in-law Sally Hassler and wife Mark, all of Brazil, several nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sharon, sisters Norma White and Mary Kathryn King, and brothers Ray and Joe White.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4-8 p.m., with Masonic Rites at 7 p.m. Cremation was chosen and burial of the ashes will take place at a later date at Clearview Cemetery.
