Francis was born April 10, 1918, in Terre Haute, as the son of Edward and Lelah Jordan South. Following graduation from high school, he served in the 1266th Army Air Corps Base Unit during World War II.
He married Nellie Marie Winn April 5, 1942.
Francis worked as a firefighter with the Brazil Fire Department for more than 20 years and then continued his employment as a guard at the Indiana State Farm and Brazil's first planning and zoning administrator.
He was a member of the Nazarene Church in Brazil.
He was preceded in death by his parents, other siblings and son Francis South Jr., in 2002.
He is survived by his wife Nellie South, sons Bill South and wife Michele, Columbia Station, Ohio, and Tom South and wife Phyllis, Terre Haute, daughters Charlene Kelley, Columbus, Ind., Beverly Hopper, Las Vegas, and Nina Hylton, Riley, Ind., sister Marcella Myers and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other extended family.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., today, at Moore Funeral Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home, with Pastor George Hewitt officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Calcutta Cemetery.
