"Research shows that students at the middle school level who can not read, is based on what they did not learn in pre-school and kindergarten," Julie McFadden told a room full of Early Education teachers.
McFadden is the Regional Reading First Coach/Consultant and Cognitive Coaching Agency Trainer for the Indiana Department of Education. With more than 22 years of classroom experience, she simply wanted to elaborate on what the educators already know.
"In this room there, is more than 300 years of experience in working with children. I can not compete with that, but I can enhance what everyone already knows," she said.
McFadden worked with teachers on enhancing phonological awareness, phonemic awareness and phonics.
"Research shows that children who participated in cognitive focused preschools were less likely to repeat a grade or be referred to special education," she said. "Research also shows depending on how quickly children learn to read often depends on how much phonological awareness they have when they begin kindergarten."
She also stressed the importance of teachers working with young students and making sure that the children understand and learn the concept.
"For example, if you show students a picture of a cow and part of the class sees the cow and the other part doesn't, work with the group that doesn't understand," she said. "For them to reach success in the higher levels of education, it starts with us at the Early Education level."
"It was an excellent workshop," LEAAP Center Coordinator Mary Yelton told The Brazil Times. "The overall response was excellent from the 33 attendants was great."
Yelton did confirm to The Times that McFadden might return to Clay County.
"She has offered to return, after the first of the year and share several topics that she didn't have time to cover," Yelton said. "We look forward to possibly having her back, she has many years of experience in the classroom and she really knows what needs to happen to prepare children for school."
