He was born Dec. 25, 1948, in Clay County, the son of Fred and Betty James Smith.
He attended Brazil High School. On Dec. 31, 1967, he married his sweetheart Anna McCabe. She survives.
Jerry was a welder for Prox Company, Inc., for more than 40 years. He enjoyed spending time on his computer, fishing and spending time with family.
He was affectionately called "Old Man" by his wife and "Pappy" and "Poppy" by his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Anna, one daughter Devona Pope and husband Ed, Louisiana, one son Gerald "Jerry" Smith, five grandchildren Ashley Pope, Joshua Pope, Austin Smith, Kaitlyn Smith, Dustin Pope, twin sister Sherry Shelley and husband Larry, Brazil, several nieces and nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Betty Smith and one sister Carolyn Rowe.
Services will be held Saturday, at 1 p.m., at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave, Brazil, with Pastor Rick Wetnight officiating. Burial will follow at Bee Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, from 4-8 p.m., and one hour prior to services on Saturday.
