Clay County Day began in a nonchalant manner nearly three decades ago. The idea sprung up among a group of semi-retired businessmen who met for coffee at the old Blue Bonnet. Since most of them were planning to spend a couple of winter months in Florida, they decided to meet for dinner with their spouses at the Bradenton Adami's Restaurant in January, 1980.
Francis Wilcoxin, one of the organizers, said the word was casually mentioned to other "snowbirds." On the appointed day, 33 people from Clay County "showed up without any reservations." The decision was made to make the occasion an annual affair.
"The response was more than anyone dreamed it would be," Wilcoxin said. As it continued to grow, the event was formally organized and better preparations were made.
For the last 15 years, the annual meeting has been held in Bradenton--the city of origin.
