TERRE HAUTE -- Area boys' basketball teams took a quick break from practice on Friday night and got a chance to see where they were in terms of outside competition in a jamboree at Terre Haute North.

Terre Haute South and Northview joined forces on the scoreboard and faced Terre Haute North and West Vigo in two quarters of play.

The Braves showed off their athleticism and the quick strike scoring prowess of Indiana State-bound guard Jake Odum, who flashed to the basket for eight first quarter points against West Vigo. South's 1-3-1 zone proved adept at harassing the Vikings' offense into several early turnovers. Ian McIntyre sank a couple of 3-pointers and the Braves blew out to a 23-9 lead after one quarter.

Northview and first-year head coach Ernie Maesch made their debut for their fans against a sizable Terre Haute North squad.

The Knights made a few early turnovers and missed a couple of good looks around the basket, but overall didn't fair badly against a Patriots' team that features a couple of talented 6'7 interior players.

Though Thomas Anderson missed much of the quarter after banging knees with a Northview player early on, Justin Gant took over the paint with 10 points and four rebounds.

The Patriots' size forced the Knights into mostly contested shots on their drives to the basket resulting in four-of-14 shooting. However, Brad Wilson knocked down a late 3-pointer to go with a score in the paint from Ethan Tanner and the Knights got within 14-9 at the horn.

"It's tough right now for the players," said Maesch. "They are learning a new offense and defense. We're going to take it slow. We were not nearly patient enough."

The Knights got into a 3-point shootout with West Vigo in the final period as each team combined for 11 from long range.

Unfortunately for the Knights, the Vikings had seven of the made shots from long range, hitting seven-of-eight 3-pointers in the quarter.

"For us to win against quality opponents, we're going to have to do things correctly," said Maesch. "We haven't worked a lot on defense yet. That's what we'll be doing the next two weeks."

Tyler Wampler drilled three of the Vikings 3-pointers in the quarter that saw West Vigo outscore Northview 24-20.

After driving to the hoop against the Patriots, the Knights went to the perimeter against the shorter Vikings and got two 3-pointer from Austin Akers and Trent Lancaster.

Akers had a team-high 13 points with Lancaster adding six and Jordan Keller adding a late three-point play.

"We're about where I thought we'd be," said Maesch of his team's preparations for the season opener on Dec. 5 against those same Patriots.

In the quarter between North and South, the Braves took a 12-8 advantage on a couple of 3-pointers from Jacob Tanoos and sophomore Anthony McGill.

The Knights host Terre haute North on Dec. 5 with a 6 p.m. JV game.
