Two songbird sisters will be traveling across the United States together.

Elizabeth and Rebecca Maurey will be traveling to the American Choral Director's Association (ACDA) National Conference as part of the National High School Honor Choir in Oklahoma City, Okla. March 4-7. The choir is to be conducted by Christine Bass from New Jersey.

"They are the only two singers from Indiana," Northview High School Music/Choir teacher Kristina Waugh said. "I think it is a great honor for them."

The sisters are excited about their adventure.

"We are both really excited, we will work in a completely different environment with different people," Rebecca said.

"I think it will be a great learning experience for us," Elizabeth added.

Both girls recorded an audition, which consisted of singing an art song called an aria, singing scales to show their range and singing a song acapella.

"I think that anytime a student is given the opportunity to be a part of something like this it energizes the student and the teacher," Waugh told The Brazil Times. "It broadens their horizon and they get to see something that they have known and loved forever through different eyes."

Both girls are very involved with music, Elizabeth competed at the National Association of Teacher of Singer-Junior/Senior Division where she placed first. She also sings with the College Chorale of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and the Madrigal Singers.

Rebecca, is involved in marching band, pep band and jazz band.

Both girls sing at Big Walnut Missionary Baptist Church and at Bee Ridge Congregation.

The sister duo wants to keep music in their lives after high school.

"I'm looking into different colleges," Elizabeth said. "I want to focus on vocal performance with a teaching degree in music."

"I also want to look into vocal performance, as well as instrumental," Rebecca added. "I love to play."

Their trip will not be all fun and games, the girls will be working hard to reach their goals.

"While in Oklahoma they will rehearse daily with the choir, visit other events at the conference," Waugh said. "The highlight will be their performance on the last evening for the ACDA members and family."

With two girls going the cost is going to be twice as much, so there is talk of a benefit concert, of which more information will be provided as it becomes available.

To make donations to cover costs for the Maureys trip money may be sent to Kristina Waugh at Northview High School at 1 West Knight Drive. For more information call Waugh at 448-2661.

I enjoyed having both of you in my 3rd grade class. I knew you were both exceptional talents as well as beautiful, kind girls. I would love to come to a benefit concert. Mrs. Veronica Lucas
