A local principal steps down, but he's not leaving permanently.

At the Clay Community School Board of Trustees Special Session Thursday the resignation of Clay City Elementary Principal Jon Russell was accepted in a 7-0 vote.

Russell, who remains the principal until June 30, said the decision was not an easy one.

"I was deployed to Iraq for 15 months," he told The Brazil Times. "I was away from my family and now I want to spend some time with them. It will be a positive step for us."

Russell taught fifth-and sixth-grade at Ladoga Elementary in the South Montgomery School Corporation from the Fall 1989 to the Spring 1995.

Then in Fall 1995, he became the assistant principal at Cloverdale Elementary in the Cloverdale Community School Corporation.

Russell, who is licensed to teach first- through sixth-grade and has been with the CCSC since 2001, is anxious for the change.

"I'm ready to be back in the classroom with the students. I have enjoyed being principal," he said. "I want to thank everyone for their support and I hope that we continue doing the best to support the children."

Jon - I wish you and your family all the best. Having served, I know how the separations can be hard on family life. Good Luck!

Thanks for your years of service to CCE, and your years of service to our country. It is a shame that

you cannot stay on as Principal. I do wish you the best and hope you do have more time to enjoy your family and friends. Thanks also for taking the HIGH

ROAD that shows the type of person you truly are.

I'm so happy to hear that Mr. Russell will now have more time to spend with his family. His absence will surely be felt by all those with ties to CCE. We, as parents and staff, have lost a principal that truly cared about the most important thing...the kids! I'm crossing my fingers that the school corporation will be diligent in finding a replacement who possesses the qualities they find important.

Jon Russell is a wonderful principal, father,soldier/officer and all around great person. Clay Community Schools should have done whatever it takes to keep him as principal of Clay City Elementary. It is sad to lose a principal of such high caliber and standards. I wish him good luck in the future.
