Easy baskets are very often, hard to come by at any level of high school basketball. So when a team has the opportunity to score points via the free throw line, it's advisable that it takes advantage of the chance.
On Monday night, Northview had 17 chances at the charity stripe. The Knights made just three of those shots as Terre Haute South came out on the winning side of a 27-19 decision.
The freshmen Braves hit six-of-10 from the free thow line, but it was some timely jump shooting by Tiffany Fagg in the third quarter and Kelsey Kennedy in the fourth period that opened up a close contest.
Fagg knocked three straight jumpers from the free throw line around a hoop from the Knights' Danielle LaTourette to take a 17-13 lead late in the third quarter. Katie Thomas added a free throw and Kennedy knocked home a shot as South grabbed a 20-13 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Knights meanwhile were struggling from the field, turning the ball over seven times in the fourth quarter while attempting to dent the Braves' lead.
Kennedy opened the period with a jumper and followed with a wide open 3-pointer to push the gap to 25-13. The Knights' Anna Pinkston scored a three-point play to get the Knights back within 25-16, but the Knights missed nine of 11 free throws in the second half.
In the first half, the Knights led late in the first half as LaTourette scored four of her six points and grabbed four of her seven rebounds. Pinkston had four of her seven points in the first half. Hansen had six of her seven rebounds in the second half.
Kennedy had a game-high 10 points for the Braves and Chelsea Whitesell had six rebounds for South.
On Dec. 3, LaTourette tallied 14 points to held lead the Knights to a 42-5 win over West Vigo.
Hansen had eight points, Darcy Bass added seven and Alyssa Conrad added four.
The Knights (1-3 overall) travel to Cascade on Monday evening for a 6 p.m. game.
