SPENCER -- Preparing to host its own invitational on Saturday, the Northview Knights hit the road for a tune-up with conference opponent Owen Valley on Wednesday evening.
The Knights looked to be in good working order after posting a 57-24 dual match win, dropping just two contested matches on the evening.
"It's nice to see some of the things we work on in practice coming to fruition," Northview coach Dan Mikesell commented. "Owen Valley is kind of in the same boat as we are with a lot of young wrestlers."
The Knights took control of this match right off the opening whistle as 103-pounder, Caleb Nicosin, went right after his opponent. The Northview freshman overpowered Austin Miller and wasted little time in pressing the Patriot's shoulders to the mat for a pin in 45 seconds.
Forfeit victories at 112 and 119 left the Knights with a quick 18-0 team lead just minutes into the match.
Luke Pingleton added to the lead for the Knights by building an early 8-0 lead after gaining a take down and back points against Mike Bird, a transfer from North Putnam. Pingleton built his lead to 10-0 as time dwindled in the opening period and actually scored the fall as the buzzer sounded, but the official decision was the whistle came after the buzzer.
No matter, Pingleton continued to press on and finished the win 27 seconds into the second period by clipping Bird.
Owen Valley made a win by winning the 130, 140 and 145-pound classes, but the Knights' Brandon Mikesell took 135 pounds via fall as well.
Mikesell took a 5-0 lead against Tim Arnold, one of three Owen Valley captains.
After earning three-near fall points in the fist period, Mikesell led 7-1 at the end of the first period after a second take down. Opening the second period, Arnold earned an escape before Mikesell scored the fall at the 2:20 mark.
The most exciting match of the night came at 152 pounds between the Knights Nathan Duregger and Owen Valley's Daniel Shepherd.
Duregger looked to be in control during the first period, building a 7-0 lead before a late reversal by Shepherd narrowed the gap to 7-2. The second period saw Duregger nearly earn the pin, scoring back points to go up 11-4, but Shephed reversed Duregger.
On his back twice late in the match, Duregger scrambled out of trouble and led by as much as 17-8 before holding on for a 17-13 victory.
"That's the same thing that happened to Nathan on Saturday (at the Westfield Tourney)," Mikesell said. "He'd build a lead and then get put on his back, but tonight he showed the guts and hustle to come back."
The Knights built on their lead at 160 and 171 pounds as Brady Silvers and Aaron see each earned second period falls.
Silvers' match was knotted at 3-apiece in the second period when he was able to score the fall against Tony Dresher.
See was in a tight battle against Michael Hill, leading 2-1 heading into the second period when he defeated Hill by pin at the 2:19 mark.
Tommy Holifield was next up and responded by defeating another Patriots' team captain, Chase Behran, by fall in 1:14.
At 215 pounds, Junior Hubbard built a 5-0 lead heading into the second period against Austin Yake before he scored a pin at the 4:41 mark to secure the team victory.
The Knights will host the Northview Invitational on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.
