Hoosiers end losing streak by beating TCU

BLOOMINGTON -- Devan Dumes scored 20 points and Tom Pritchard added 15 points, leading Indiana past TCU 66-56 on Wednesday.

The victory ended Indiana's two-game losing streak, but TCU didn't make it easy on the Hoosiers (5-4).

Zvonko Buljan had 19 points and Keion Mitchem finished with 10 to lead the Horned Frogs (7-4), and their suffocating defense kept them close for 30 minutes. The loss ended TCU's six-game winning streak and a five-game stretch in which it had held four opponents to fewer than 50 points.

Eventually, though, Indiana survived a grueling mishmash of miscues.

The teams combined for 16 turnovers and 19 fouls, shot a combined 38.6 percent from the floor and connected on just 5-of-16 3-pointers in the first half.

The result: Neither team could gain the upper hand.

TCU went on a 5-0 run to build a 19-16 lead with 7:27 left but managed only four more points the rest of the half.

Indiana closed on its own 5-0 run, taking a 27-23 lead on Malik Story's buzzer-beating 3-pointer, then got things righted in the second half. It scored the first four points to make it 31-23 and after TCU closed to 33-29, the Hoosiers answered with a six-point flurry to rebuild a 39-29 cushion.

Dumes' 3-pointer sparked another quick spurt that ended with another 3 from Dumas and a short jumper from Nick Williams to give Indiana a 51-33 lead with 8:56 remaining.

TCU never got closer than 10 the rest of the way despite making a frantic charge in the final 90 seconds when Indiana got careless. The Horned Frogs scored the final 12 points of the game.

Indiana played again without guard Verdell Jones, who has missed three straight games since being knocked out by a pick Nov. 30 against Cornell. Coach Tom Crean has said Jones was not seriously injured although he was taken off the court on a stretcher during that game.

TCU's top scorer, Kevin Langford, spent most of the night in foul trouble and scored only 6 points before fouling out with 10:04 to go.

Williams added 11 points for the Hoosiers, who improved their record over nonconference foes at Assembly Hall to 183-18 with a victory over one of Crean's close friends. TCU's first-year coach, Jim Christian, was an assistant with Crean at Western Kentucky in the early 1990s.
